The 5 Ways to Achieve Work-Life Balance

Work fills the majority of our daily lives. If you enjoy your work it can energize you and your days will feel very rewarding.  However, even if you do love your work, working more hours than necessary can start to affect your personal wellness and your creativity. Finding the right work – life balance is important and will help you have higher performance levels in your career.

We have found and listed a few of the best ways to create more work-life balance:

1.Set your boundaries

Emails do not stop but you can. Decide to not check emails after a certain time and leave these emails. If you make yourself contactable 24 hours for 7 days a week on email or phone, you set the expectation that you are always available and can work anytime. If it is not a life or death situation, it is not necessary to reply to emails at all hours of the day or night.

2.Be present

Wellness includes mental health and when your mind is always at the office or on work, you are out of balance and not able to enjoy the rest of your life and your family fully. Be present in the moment, at work focus on work and leave it there and at home focus on family. Entrepreneurs may find it difficult to “switch off “ from work but by focusing on the present moment can help with creativity.

 3.Work smart

Working longer hours does not make you more productive. According to the guardian , people who work longer hours feel more stressed, have anxiety and are irritable. There are many employees who sit at their desks for hours but do not produce the work of people who sit there in less time. Being smart about the tasks you are given requires you to think about getting the job done in the most efficient and fastest way possible.  Being smart can mean keeping meetings short  set up meetings for 30 minutes only instead of 60 minute slots.

4.Plan ahead

Planning for a few minutes a day can save you hours in a week and lead to more productivity and balance. Brian Tracy, a successful author, once said this “Every minute spent planning can save you 10 minutes on execution”. In your plan, prioritise your list on exactly what needs to be done first and work on getting that list completed. You will notice momentum starting to help you achieve more in less time which will give you more time for other important things in life.

5. Allocate time to exercise

Exercise has many benefits, but most importantly it helps with balanced living. Work life can be stressful and exercise is one way to relive the stress of daily work and improves concentration and overall health.

There is no one size fits all formula to balanced living, for each person it may look very different but what we can agree on, is that it includes good nutrition, enough rest,enough recreational and family time. When your career and work over take any of these areas of your life then it’s time to re-prioritise your days and create a better and more balanced lifestyle.
