Make your career count in 2020

“Don’t live the same year twice and call it a life – R. Sharma.”

We spend most of our waking hours at work, when you think about it that means in a 24hour day, 8 of those hours are at work.

Everything in life is a choice and if you are not in your dream job or loving the career you have chosen. You can make adjustments to go in the direction of your dreams or make your days at work happier by having a plan to ensure that you are learning and growing daily.

Life is about learning and if you are not learning then you are not growing. Here are a few ideas to get you started in the right direction to create a more fulfilling career.

Step 1: Goal

The goal sets the direction for your career. Have a goal and decide where you are going in your career. What do you want? is the key question to ask in order to set the focus for the path you are taking.

Step 2: Plan

Once you have decided where you want to be by the end of 2020, you can put a plan in place to get there. This is a daily plan. If you want to improve your skills then consider a training course, sign up for a new degree or do daily learning on the job or via other channels such as online learning to move you closer to your goal of being better in your job and pave a way for a new role you want to move into.

Step 3: Milestones

Track your progress with milestones, have key indicators that alert you in the year that you are on track towards moving in the direction of your goal. Celebrate every tiny victory along the way and reward yourself for moving in the direction of your dreams.

Step 4: Accountability

Have an accountability partner such as your boss, a colleague or find a mentor. Find a person who wants to see you succeed in your career and who will help you to stay on track.

Step 5: Enjoy the journey

The journey towards your goal is what makes the goal worth achieving. Enjoy the highs and lows of the journey.
