Let THIS YEAR, be your year with a difference!

Career goals are not only important to your career but it gives you a sense of direction and helps you to make progress in the specific direction you have chosen. Achieving the smaller goals you set can give you confidence to reach greater heights. It is all about having a proactive rather than reactive approach and it adds more purpose in your days.
A career goal is simple, it is answering the questions – where do I want to be and what do I want to achieve in my career?
The goals should help you to get there. So where should you start? Here are a few guideline questions to answer to get you going:

Career planning

  • Where do you see yourself in 1 year from now in terms of your career plan?
  • What can you do this year, to get to the next level or step in your career?
  • What skills do you still need to make the move in your career?
  • What are you interested in, that will make a difference in your career plan?
  • Who do you need to speak to that will guide you with good advice in the right direction of your goal?

Remember that goals should be SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-based.
Now that you have decided where you are going, here are a few examples of career goals that you may consider.

  • Add more value with your skill set. Up-skill yourself by taking a course and doing training
  • Earn more in the same line of work. This would involve searching for a new job/opportunity.
  • Become a leader. Take on a leadership role by volunteering your time in a new project.
  • Network. Volunteer your skills outside of work at an association that can enhance your networking opportunities

Know this … “life is a journey and only you hold the map”, it is up to you to make it your best year!
