The Art of Career Path Planning

If you are like most people the art of choosing a career in or after school was a maze-like experience to say the least. The world has evolved to such an extent that there are numerous new careers arising to choose from.

This not only complicates the process of choosing the right career, but makes the continued career alignment and development imperative. A person’s career will change a few times during his/her based on trial and error.

“If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there”.

To avoid this, being proactive and planning needs should happen multiple times during your career to keep you on track towards your desired goals.

Here are a few career planning guidelines to get you started:

Step 1: Starting point – Determine where you are at?

Review your career history to date (if you have one) and review the following:

  • Your likes and dislikes
  • Your needs and wants
  • Examine your pastimes and hobbies
  • Make note of your past accomplishments
  • Look beyond your current job for transferable skills

Step 2: Establish your direction: where are you going?

  • Set career and job goal
  • Explore Opportunities to up-skill yourself if there are gaps
  • Research internal or external opportunities for advancement
  • Determine what level of responsibility you want
  • Determine the types of projects that interests you
  • Determine what results you  would like to achieve
  • Search for the type of company that you want to work for based on culture fit, environment, size, integrity, reputation.
  • Be clear on the type of problems you care enough about to focus your entire career on solving.
  • Break down your compensation package required
