Leadership Influences Productivity

As a senior manager or a CEO, you will know that productivity influences the performance of a company but what makes a team productive and want to perform better at work? Leadership plays a critical role in answering this question. The higher the level of involvement and commitment the leader has , the higher the chances of having a high performing workplace.

Jamie Harris, is the writer of a white paper called  The STAR Team Model for High Performance and in it,  identifies a different “ROI” for leaders called the Return of Involvement and states that the leader should play a facilitation role to focus on engagement of their teams at work.  These facilitation based leaders should demonstrate strategic thinking, collaboration and self awareness.

Leadership not only should always promote teamwork, lead by example by being engaging, respectful at all times to staff, have a clear vision and set the direction for each employee  but most of all must be trusted to make good decisions based on the betterment of the whole team and not just the bottom line. When this happens the team start to engage and are committed to continuous improvement and moving the company forward faster.

 In the Inc. post the “dynamics that distinguish effective teams at Google” the writer Welle, describes certain dynamics that productive teams require:

  1. Psychological safety, this is where individuals can be vulnerable enough to share their knowledge and opinions and feel valued but most importantly before this can happen there must be trust present. Employees need to know that they can trust leadership before they are vulnerable, where there is no trust there is no leadership and low performance.
  2. Dependability: Members have confident in their co-workers and believe that they will deliver what they are supposed to when they are supposed to, this creates an environment of trust and support on each project. The team propels each other forwards when there is trust and collaboration.
  3. Clarity of roles is also important; this brings order and structure in the business. When everyone understands what they bring to the workplace daily, how they contribute to the success of others, and what they need to do it helps productivity.
  4. Meaning and impact is vital to productivity, when you have meaning and purpose to what you do, it drives you to do it with more energy. Leadership has a key role to play in ensuring people understand the impact of their work.

Productive environments or team cultures are energising and moves at a very fast pace. As a manager and leader, it is important to keep your “finger on the pulse” to ensure a productive team environment. Score your team on the following areas:

  • Environment: The team celebrates special days and has social events outside of work to build morale and trust by getting to know each other better.
  • Rewards: The team celebrates all victories and successes when it comes to projects and completed tasks and is rewarded for their efforts with recognition or an incentive.
  • Communication: The team has a consistent flow of communication, this includes team meetings with brainstorming, status meetings, performance status and general knowledge of what the rest of the team are doing and the direction of the company.
  • Outcomes: The team is outcome focused and uses time management well, not busy running from place to place.
  • Leadership: The language of the leader is respectful and clear. Leaders can be trusted because of their openness in communication and direction.
  • Continuous Improvement: The team is consistently coming up with fresh ideas and takes responsibility for their roles.
  • Goals: The team has goals and are focused on achieving the goals
  • People: The leader knows the people in their team, their strengths and personal goals and there  is a good mix of various skills, strengths and gender balance within the team.
